Obesity and Adolescence

Obesity today is an omnipresent phenomenon in children and adolescents, something that was not seen as much in the past, for all kinds of reasons which include the popularity of junk food, sedentary lifestyle, video games, the Internet, etc. The overweight teenager struggles with a changing and sometimes difficult social world and a growing independence from parents which may be complicated by conflicts about weight and dieting. On another note, many teenagers today suffer from cardiometabolic diseases (hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) which were not present in so many young people in the past.

Weight control doesn’t get any easier during adolescence. This is the reason why we created this program especially for teens who choose to work on their weight and related issues.

The goal of the program is to help teenagers deal effectively with their weight, without becoming chronic yo-yo dieters or developing eating disorder symptoms. Although the adolescent program is based on a similar approach as our adult program, it is modified to address specific developmental issues and challenges. In the end, our ultimate goal is to teach these adolescents healthy lifestyles so that they can assimilate and practice them with fun and pleasure.
